When in Jaipur… #Jaipur.highlights

During our time in Delhi, guys from our hostel advised us to explore the Golden Triangle. Jaipur is part of this triangular, tourist circuit in the north of India.

We spent around 2 weeks in this Pink City of the state Rajasthan. With our Rajasthan tour as one of the most memorable parts of our trip, we’re still very happy we followed the advise.

In case you also plan to visit this ancient city, here are some highlights you shouldn’t miss.. Enjoy!

#1 The Old City of Jaipur

Old City

Within Jaipur you find the Old City, secured by 6 meter high walls and 7 gates. This part is still mostly intact. Here you find beautiful Rajasthani architecture, big shopping bazaars and most highlights of the city. So, a good place to start your introduction with the city!

If you want to know more about the origin of the city, her nickname Pink City, and you’re curious to see the video impression that we made, take a look here.

#2 The Wind Palace or Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal

This is the palace that Jaipur is famous for. In the middle of the Old City, and created by the founder of Jaipur.

Here you can read more about the distinctive form, the function of the royal facade and where you can find the best vantage point over the ‘Palace of Breeze’.

#3 Royal Rajasthani tombs Gaitore Ki Chhatriyan & a Ganesh temple on the hill

Gaitore Ki Chhatriyan & Garh Ganesh Temple

Less famous than the Wind, Water and City Palace of Jaipur, but the architecture, esthetics and serene surroundings of these royal tombs and temple up the hills are just as impressive.

Here’s the article and clip – including temple goats and selfies, – we made of our trip.

#4 Chandra Mahal at the City Palace

Chandra Mahal

You can’t leave the city without a visit to the City Palace (where there are still royals living!). Located next to the Wind Palace, and comprising a big surface with lots of architectural highlights and beautifully decorated buildings, courtyards, galleries and gardens. You can even have your future and/or fortune be told by a traditional palmist :).

Here we posted some more background info and photos of our visit!

#5 The Hathroi Fort

Hathroi Fort

This old fort you find in the middle of the city and there’s still people living in there! We met one of the residents and got invited for a chai. And also got the breath taking sunset as a bonus :). See the pictures and read about the visit here!

#6 The Amer Fort

Amer Fort

The oldest fort of Rajasthan, 12 bedrooms for the 12 women of the king, a secret passage.. and on top of that in 2013 proclaimed as UNESCO heritage site..

Our curiosity grew and we went to check out this fort, just outside of Jaipur. Here you can read about it.

#7 The Albert Hall Museum

Albert Hall Museum

A collection of art found within a piece of art.. This building alone is already worth the trip. During the day, but also with the neon light show at night. In this article you can find out more about the name, the building and its art collection.

#8 Galta Ji or the Monkey Temple

Galta Ji

Monkeys everywhere around you in this sacred pilgrimage spot. A gorgeous Hindu temple just a little outside of Jaipur. In the middle of a rock formation, and full of both cheeky macaques and furry langurs. Completely not shy at all!

If you want to find out how the monkeys ended up living in this temple complex, check out the Galta Ji’s story here.

#9 Jal Mahal, the Water Palace

Jal Mahal

What makes this palace so special, is that it is or seems to be built in the middle of a beautiful lake. And that the complex is flooded for 90 procent nowadays..

Want to know the story behind the partial disappearance of this Water Palace? Check the history here.

#10 The Jaipur (rooftop) restaurants

Breakfast & the rest

And last but not least, a lot of the restaurants in Jaipur are worth the visit! Especially the ones high up on a roof, with a magnificent view over the city.
