Next to the famous Wind Palace, in the middle of Jaipur, lies the City Palace. This palace was established at the same time as the city Jaipur itself, both by maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II.
Like most palaces, the complex covers a large area with a number of buildings, courtyards, galleries and gardens.
Until 1949, the City Palace was the ceremonial and administrative seat of the maharaja of Jaipur. And the location of religious, commercial and cultural events.
Nowadays there’s the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum inside, with different galleries (collections with textiles and fabrics, arms and armour, and paintings, a.o.). A part of the complex is still the home of the Jaipur royal family. You can visit parts as well, but you do have to buy a more expensive ticket.

One of the galleries. Here you see a portrait of the Maharaja. And one ofth e giant silver pots, that made the Guinness Book of Records. Maharaja Madho Singh had them filled with Ganges water and took them on the boat to England. Here he attended the crowning of King Edward VII, and with the pots he didn’t have to use the English drinking water.

Behind the audience hall you enter the Peacock Gate. Named after the decorations in this courtyard.. and as you can see, we really liked this detailed artwork!
